Food Fair began issuing small-denomination paper scrip in the 1960s as part of promotional trading programs, redeemable against purchases rather than functioning as currency in any legal sense. The Pantry Pride name came later, after the company rebranded its stores during its slow financial collapse — Food Fair filed for bankruptcy in 1978, and the Pantry Pride chain was eventually sold off to separate ownership. Scrip that bridges both names likely dates from the transitional period and was never intended to outlast a single shopping trip.
