Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which ran through the 1970s and recruited central banks worldwide to mint circulating coins carrying agricultural themes as a form of development messaging. Jamaica's participation was brief — this type ran only three years before the island's monetary system shifted toward aluminum coinage as copper prices made bronze increasingly uneconomical for small denominations.
