Additional information

Never adopted, this piece belongs to a wave of European Union accession-era pattern strikes produced for member and prospective-member territories that never ultimately issued euro coinage. The United Kingdom's decision to remain outside the eurozone made any such issue a political impossibility, yet trial pieces were nonetheless struck — some officially, some by private mints anticipating contracts that never materialized. Northern Ireland's distinct regional identity made it a natural subject for speculative designs during a period when euro adoption still appeared plausible to some in Westminster.
