The Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya and British Borneo was itself a transitional institution — created in 1952 to issue a unified currency across territories that everyone involved knew would not remain unified for long. By 1962, Malayan independence was already five years old, and the federation that would become Malaysia was less than a year from formation. These late-series cents were struck knowing the authority issuing them was nearly obsolete.
The 1962 issue was among the last bronze cents produced before the series was superseded by the currencies of Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei following 1963.
