Corsi's Lit'l Giant was a regional grocery chain in northwestern Pennsylvania, and like many small American retailers during the late 1960s and 1970s, it issued fractional cent scrip to sidestep the chronic shortage of low-denomination coinage that plagued cash-heavy retail operations at the time. These store-issued notes functioned as change tokens — handed back to customers instead of pennies and redeemable only at the issuing outlet.
The practice was technically extralegal under federal statutes prohibiting private currency, but enforcement against small retailers was essentially nonexistent, and such scrip circulated openly for years across the region.
