Obverse description The national coat of arms of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas occupies the central field, featuring a quartered shield depicting a British ship pursuing two pirate vessels above a rising sun, supported on the left by a marlin and on the right by a flamingo standing on a grassy mount. A Santa Maria-type ship in full sail surmounts the shield as crest, above a banner bearing the national motto in two tiers. The circular legend COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while the date appears in the lower field beneath the supporters.
