| Reverse description | The reverse features the denomination ONE CENT inscribed horizontally across the centre of the field, flanked on either side by a wreath of olive branches tied at the base. Above the denomination appear two large Chinese characters 洋元 (foreign dollar/cent), and below appear the Chinese characters 一分 (one cent). The Jawi legend ساتو سين (satu sen, one cent) is inscribed below the wreath at the foot of the design. The circular legend BRITISH NORTH BORNEO Co. runs along the upper periphery in raised Latin letters, and the whole design is enclosed within a beaded border. |

| Additional information |
The British North Borneo Chartered Company was granted its royal charter in 1881, making it one of the last chartered companies in history to exercise sovereign administrative powers over a territory. It governed what is now the Malaysian state of Sabah directly, collecting taxes, maintaining courts, and issuing its own coinage — this cent among the first struck under that authority. The company contracted minting to Heaton's Birmingham facility, which supplied most of British North Borneo's coinage throughout the charter period.
The 1882 date marks the inaugural year of company coinage. Issues from the earliest years of the series command a measurable premium over later dates.
