Obverse description A prominently rendered crested and visored helm occupies the central field, depicted in three-quarter view with elaborate wing-like plumes extending to either side, surmounted by a crown. The helm rests upon a decorative support, giving the composition a heraldic character typical of mid-sixteenth-century Italian coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading SEB EPS ET PRINCEPS LAV, identifying Sebastiano Ferrero as bishop and prince. The die work is executed in the hammered tradition, with somewhat irregular strike characteristic of the period.
