Obverse description Crowned shield of France semé with fleurs-de-lis, surmounted by a royal crown, occupying the central field. The arms are rendered in the late medieval hammered style typical of French royal coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend runs along the beaded border surrounding the device, reading KROLVS D G REX FRR, identifying Charles VIII as king of the Franks by the grace of God.
