Zhidao was the final reign period of Emperor Taizong of Song, who died in 997 after a reign marked by failed military campaigns to recover the Sixteen Prefectures from the Liao dynasty. The cash coinage of this period was produced at multiple furnaces across the empire, and calligraphic style — here the cursive caoshu running script — varied by casting location rather than by any centralized directive. The "without dot" distinction references the absence of a small raised mark within the reverse crescent, a minor die characteristic that separates this variety from Hartill 16.36.
