| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash coin featuring four Chinese characters rendered in the cursive grass script (caoshu), disposed one in each cardinal position around the central square hole. The characters are read clockwise from the top: 至 (Zhi), 道 (Dao), 元 (Yuan), 寶 (Bao), forming the reign-era legend 至道元寶 (Zhidao Yuanbao). The fluid, highly abbreviated strokes characteristic of grass script lend each character a distinctly calligraphic and dynamic quality. A raised inner rim surrounds the square perforation, and a broad outer rim frames the field. |
