| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash coin featuring four Chinese seal script (zhuanshu) characters arranged in cruciform reading order around a central square hole, the characters reading clockwise from the top: 元 (Yuan), 祐 (You), 寶 (Bao), 通 (Tong), together forming the reign-title inscription 'Yuanyou Tongbao.' The boldly rendered seal script characters are raised in high relief within a plain inner rim bordering the central perforation and an outer raised rim defining the coin's periphery. The field between the characters and the rims is flat and unadorned. The calligraphic style is characteristic of Northern Song imperial zhuanshu coinage, with fluid, rounded strokes executed with considerable artistry. |
