| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by a plain raised inner rim, with four Chinese ideograms arranged in the four cardinal quadrants reading clockwise in Regular (Kaishu) script: 元 (Yuan) at top, 祐 (You) at right, 通 (Tong) at bottom, and 寶 (Bao) at left, forming the reign-era inscription 元祐通寶 (Yuanyou Tongbao). The characters are boldly cast in relief within the flat field, enclosed by a raised outer rim of standard Song dynasty cash coin format. The overall style is consistent with Northern Song imperial calligraphic convention for circulating iron cash. |
