| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a plain raised rim on both inner and outer edges. Four Chinese seal script (篆書) characters arranged in clockwise reading order around the central hole, one character in each cardinal position: 元 (Yuan) at top, 符 (Fu) at right, 寶 (Bao) at bottom, and 通 (Tong) at left, together forming the legend 元符通寶 (Yuanfu Tongbao). The seal script calligraphy is rendered in bold raised relief with characteristically rounded, archaic strokes distinctive of the Northern Song imperial casting tradition. The flat field between the inner and outer rims is unadorned. |
