| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash coin centred on a square central perforation, surrounded by a raised inner rim and an outer border rim. Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) occupy the four quadrants around the central hole, reading clockwise from the top: 永 (Yǒng), 通 (Tōng), 樂 (Lè), and 寶 (Bǎo), to be read in the traditional sequence top–bottom, right–left as 永樂通寶 (Yǒnglè Tōngbǎo). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief against a flat field, exhibiting the confident, authoritative brushwork characteristic of early Ming imperial coinage. No additional devices, symbols, or mint marks appear on this face. |
