Obverse description Central square hole pierces the field, flanked by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform reading order: top to bottom and right to left. The characters 宣統通寶 (Xuantong Tongbao) denote the reign title of the Xuantong Emperor and the phrase 'circulating currency.' The legends are cast in low relief against a plain, undecorated field, with no rim ornamentation beyond a plain raised border.
