Obverse description The obverse presents four Chinese characters in kaishu (regular script) arranged in the traditional cash-coin layout: read top to bottom, right to left around the central square hole. The character 宣 (Xuan) appears at the top, 統 (Tong) at the bottom, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 寶 (Bao) to the left, collectively reading 宣統通寶 — meaning 'Xuantong [Emperor's reign] circulating currency.' The characters are bold and well-defined in raised relief against a plain, unadorned field. A raised square border frames the central round perforation, following the centuries-old Chinese cash-coin convention.

Reverse description The reverse bears two Manchu script characters in raised relief, flanking the central square-bordered round hole: the syllable 'Boo' (ᠪᠣᠣ) to the left and 'Guwang' (ᡤᡠᠸᠠᠩ) to the right, together reading 'Boo-guwang,' the Manchu rendering of the Guangzhou (Canton) mint name. The Manchu glyphs are rendered in a fluid, cursive style with characteristic vertical orientation. The field is plain and undecorated, with a raised rim encircling the entire reverse.
