| Obverse description | Central square hole flanked by four Chinese ideograms arranged in cruciform reading order, rendered in elegant Seal script (篆書). The four-character reign title legend 宣和元寶 (Xuanhe Yuanbao) is read clockwise from the top, with each character occupying one of the cardinal positions relative to the central perforation. The characters are boldly cast in relief against a flat, undecorated field, with no inner or outer rim decoration beyond the standard raised borders. The overall calligraphic style reflects the refined artistic sensibility associated with the court of Emperor Huizong, under whose reign Seal script legends were particularly favored. |
