Obverse description Four Chinese ideograms arranged in a cruciform reading pattern around a central square hole, rendered in running script (xingshu). The inscription reads clockwise: 熙 (Xi), 寧 (Ning), 元 (Yuan), 寶 (Bao), forming the reign title legend 'Xi Ning Yuan Bao' (熙寧元寶). The characters are boldly cast within a plain inner rim and an outer raised rim, set against a flat, unadorned field. The fluid, cursive quality of the running script is characteristic of Northern Song dynasty cash coinage produced during the Xining era (1068–1077) of Emperor Shenzong.
