Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a plain raised inner rim, with four Chinese characters arranged in clockwise reading order around the central void, rendered in the fluid cursive strokes of running script (xingshu). The legend 熙寧元寶 (Xi Ning Yuan Bao) occupies the four cardinal positions — top, right, bottom, and left — in the conventional Northern Song cash layout. The characters exhibit the characteristic connected, abbreviated strokes of running script, distinguishing this issue from contemporaneous seal or regular script varieties. A plain raised outer rim frames the entire composition, with the flat field between the characters showing the natural surface texture typical of cast bronze coinage of the Song dynasty.
