Obverse description Central square hole (cash hole) surrounded by a plain raised rim on both inner and outer edges. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in the traditional reading order — top, bottom, right, left — reading 咸豐通寶 (Xianfeng Tongbao), meaning 'Xianfeng [reign] universal currency'. The characters occupy the four quadrants of the field, cast in moderate relief against a flat, unadorned surface typical of mid-Qing dynasty cast coinage.
