Obverse description Cast brass cash coin centred on a square perforation, bearing four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform reading order: top to bottom and right to left. The reign title 同治 (Tongzhi) and the denomination inscription 通寶 (Tongbao, 'circulating treasure') occupy the four quadrants surrounding the central square hole. Characters are raised in bold relief against a flat, unadorned field, consistent with the standardised Qing dynasty cash coinage tradition.
