| Obverse description | Central square hole (穿) surrounded by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in the traditional cross-reading order: 同治通寶 (Tongzhi Tongbao), meaning 'Tongzhi [era] circulating treasure.' The characters are cast in raised relief against a flat field, with 同 (Tong) at the top, 寶 (Bao) at the bottom, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 治 (Zhi) to the left. A raised rim borders the outer edge of the coin. The casting shows characteristic workmanship of the Yunnan provincial mint, with slightly irregular surfaces consistent with period production. |
