Obverse description Round cast brass cash coin with a central square perforation. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top-bottom-right-left: 同治通寶 (Tongzhi Tongbao), meaning 'Tongzhi [reign] Universal Currency.' The characters are rendered in clean, formal strokes within a plain raised rim, with no additional decorative elements in the field.
