Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform fashion and read in the traditional sequence: top, bottom, right, left. The reign title legend 同治通寶 (Tongzhi Tongbao) identifies the issuing emperor and denomination. The characters are rendered in a formal, rectilinear style typical of Qing dynasty cast cash coinage, set within a plain raised rim. The field is flat and unadorned aside from the inscription.
