| Obverse description | Cast round coin with a central square perforation, surrounded by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion, read top-bottom-right-left. The characters 天啓通寶 (Tianqi Tongbao) are rendered in bold relief within raised inner and outer rims. The field is plain, and the strokes of the ideograms display the characteristic angular casting style of the Ming dynasty imperial mints. |
