Obverse description Round cast brass coin with a central square hole. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the square hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 天 (Tiān), 啓 (Qǐ), 通 (Tōng), 寶 (Bǎo), forming the reign title and currency designation 'Tianqi Tongbao.' The characters are rendered in raised relief against a flat, unadorned field, with a raised rim encircling the entire obverse.
