| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in the four cardinal positions around the central hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 嗣德通寶 (Tự Đức Thông Bảo). The characters are boldly cast in relief against a flat field. The coin is enclosed by a plain raised outer rim. The style is consistent with Vietnamese Nguyễn dynasty cash coinage of the reign of Emperor Tự Đức. |
