Obverse description Cast brass cash coin with a central square hole surrounded by a raised square rim. Four bold regular-script (kaishu) Chinese characters are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 順 (Shun) above, 治 (Zhi) to the right, 通 (Tong) below, and 寳 (Bao) to the left, forming the reign-era legend 'Shunzhi Tongbao' — 'Circulating treasure of the Shunzhi reign'. The characters are rendered in strong, well-defined relief against a recessed field, with a broad plain outer rim encircling the design.
