Obverse description Cast brass cash coin centred on a square perforation, surrounded by a raised inner rim and a broad flat outer rim. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are disposed in the four quadrants reading top, right, bottom, left: 順 (Shun), 治 (Zhi), 寳 (Bao), 通 (Tong), together forming the four-character reign legend 順治通寳 (Shunzhi Tongbao). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief against a recessed field, with the strokes showing the characteristic crisp, angular quality of early Qing casting.
