Reverse description The reverse presents a largely plain field surrounding the central square perforation, with a single cast Chinese character in regular script (kaishu) denoting the mint of issue. Depending on the variety, the character 東 (Dong, referring to Shandong province) appears either to the right of the square hole (Hartill 22.33) or above it (Hartill 22.34). The remainder of the field is smooth and unadorned, enclosed by a raised outer rim.
