| Obverse description | Round cast bronze coin with a central square hole, bearing four Chinese ideograms in running script (xingshu) arranged in cruciform reading order around the central perforation. The inscription reads clockwise from the top: 聖 (Sheng), 宋 (Song), 寶 (Bao), 元 (Yuan), together forming the reign title legend 'Shengsong Yuanbao.' The characters are rendered in an elegant, fluid running script style characteristic of the Northern Song period, with the variant form of 寶 (Bao) displaying spread feet as noted in Hartill 16.377. The fields between the characters are plain, and a raised rim borders the outer edge and the square central hole. |
