Obverse description Central square perforation framed by a raised square border, around which four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are disposed in cruciform fashion, read in the traditional sequence top-bottom, right-left. The legend 乾隆通寶 (Qian Long Tong Bao) denotes the Qianlong reign title and the phrase 'currency in universal circulation.' The raised characters stand in high relief against a flat field, bounded by a broad, plain outer rim. The overall design follows the standard Qing dynasty cash-coin convention, with no additional decorative devices in the field.
