Nguyên Phong was the reign title of Trần Thái Tông, the first emperor of the Trần dynasty, who held the throne while Vietnam was under existential pressure from Mongol expansion into mainland Southeast Asia. The coins attributed to this reign were produced as the Trần court was actively fortifying its position — the Mongol invasions of Đại Việt began in 1258, the final year of this issue's production window. Toda's cataloguing of this type as #16 places it among the earlier Vietnamese cast coppers systematically documented by his 1882 reference work on Annamese coins.
