Additional information

The Mạc dynasty came to power in 1527 when Mạc Đăng Dung forced the abdication of the last Lê emperor and declared himself ruler — an act the Vietnamese court historiography never forgave, branding his line as usurpers for centuries afterward. The Nguyên Hòa reign title belongs to Mạc Đăng Doanh, Đăng Dung's son, whose rule saw the dynasty at its administrative peak before the restored Lê pressed from the south.

Cast rather than struck, as was standard Vietnamese practice throughout this period, these cash coins circulated alongside older Lê issues with little distinction made by ordinary users.
