| Obverse description | Cast brass cash coin featuring a central square hole surrounded by a raised square border. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in the four cardinal fields reading top to bottom, right to left: 明 (Minh), 命 (Mạng), 通 (Thông), 寶 (Bảo), together forming the reign-title legend 'Minh Mạng Thông Bảo' (Universal currency of the Minh Mạng era). The characters are bold and well-defined, set within a plain, slightly raised outer rim. The fields between the characters are flat and unadorned. |
