| Obverse description | Imitation of the Tang dynasty Kaiyuan Tongbao cash coin, displaying the four Chinese characters 開元通寶 arranged in the four cardinal positions around a central square hole. The characters are rendered in a somewhat debased style characteristic of Sogdian imitative issues, with the legends occupying the fields between the central perforation and the outer rim. The broad flat rim frames the composition on all sides. The overall style reflects the Sogdian craftsmen's adaptation of the Chinese prototype, with minor deviations in stroke precision compared to metropolitan Tang originals. |
