| Obverse description | Four Chinese characters in standard regular script (kaishu) are arranged symmetrically around the central square perforation, read in the traditional sequence of top, bottom, right, left. The character 嘉 (Jiā) appears above the hole, 慶 (Qìng) below, 通 (Tōng) to the right, and 寶 (Bǎo) to the left, together forming the reign title legend 嘉慶通寶 (Jiaqing Tongbao). The characters are boldly cast in moderate relief against a flat, unadorned field, with the coin's inner and outer rims providing a plain border typical of Qing dynasty cash coinage. |

| Reverse description | The reverse presents two Manchu script characters flanking the central square hole, one to the left and one to the right, read vertically in the Manchu manner. The left character reads 'Boo' (ᠪᠣᠣ) and the right reads 'Su' (ᠰᡠ), together forming the mint name Boo-su, identifying the Board of Revenue mint in Beijing. The characters are cast in moderate relief with a broad, raised inner rim surrounding the square perforation, and a plain outer rim encircling the coin's flat field. |
