Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by a plain raised inner rim and a broader outer rim. Four Chinese ideograms in Seal script (篆書) are arranged in the traditional reading order — top, bottom, right, left — reading 建炎通寶 (Jianyan Tongbao). The characters are boldly cast in relief against a flat field, exhibiting the characteristic rounded, archaic strokes of the Seal script style. The legends are contained within the quadrants formed by the square perforation and the coin's circular border.
