| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash coin of the Northern Song Dynasty, featuring a central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim. The four-character reign title legend 皇宋通寶 (Huangsong Tongbao) is disposed in seal script (zhuanshu) in cruciform arrangement around the central hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 皇 (huang) above, 通 (tong) to the right, 寶 (bao) below, and 宋 (song) to the left. The characters are boldly cast in raised relief against a flat, unadorned field. The coin is bordered by a well-defined outer rim, typical of Northern Song minting practice. The surface displays an aged patina with areas of green cuprite and brown oxidation consistent with genuine burial patination. |
