Obverse description Cast iron cash coin of the Northern Song Dynasty, struck during the reign of Emperor Renzong, bearing the four-character reign legend 皇宋通寶 (Huangsong Tongbao) arranged in regular script (kaiti) in the four cardinal positions surrounding a central square perforation. The characters read top-bottom-right-left in the traditional boustrophedon reading order conventional for Song-period cash coinage. A raised inner rim borders the square central hole, and a raised outer rim frames the coin's circumference. The surfaces show the characteristic rough, granular texture of cast iron production, with flat fields between the raised legend characters. No mint marks or reverse inscriptions are present on this small-size variety.
