| Obverse description | Central square perforation (方穿) surrounded by a raised square boss, set within a broad, flat inner field. Four Chinese ideograms in regular script (楷书) are arranged in the traditional reading order — top, bottom, right, left — around the central aperture, reading 皇宋通寶 (Huáng Sòng Tōng Bǎo). The characters are crisply cast with well-defined strokes characteristic of Northern Song dynasty calligraphic convention. The field is plain and unadorned, bordered by a raised inner rim around the square hole and a well-defined outer rim encircling the coin's periphery. |
