Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top, right, bottom, left as 洪、武、寶、通 (read top-to-bottom, right-to-left: Hongwu Tongbao). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief, each occupying one cardinal position relative to the central aperture. The field between the characters and the outer rim is plain, and the entire design is enclosed by a raised circular border. The coin exhibits the characteristic casting style of early Ming dynasty cash pieces.
