| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash coin of standard Ming dynasty round form with a central square perforation, surrounded by a raised inner rim and an outer border rim. The four-character reign legend 洪武通寶 (Hongwu Tongbao) is disposed in regular script (kaishu) in the cardinal positions around the central square hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional Chinese numismatic convention: 洪 (top), 通 (right), 武 (bottom), 寶 (left). The characters are boldly raised in relief against a flat field, exhibiting the clean, authoritative brushwork characteristic of early Ming imperial coinage. The coin displays an extensive patina of green verdigris with reddish-bronze undertones consistent with aged cast bronze. |
