Obverse description Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged symmetrically around the central square hole, reading top-to-bottom then right-to-left in the traditional manner: 光 (Guang) above, 緒 (Xu) below, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 寶 (Bao) to the left. The legend reads 光緒通寶, denoting the reign title of the Guangxu Emperor and the phrase 'circulating treasure.' The field is plain and unadorned, with a raised rim encircling the coin.
