Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform reading order: top to bottom and right to left. The character 光 (Guang) appears above the hole, 緒 (Xu) below, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 寶 (Bao) to the left, together forming the reign-title legend 'Guangxu Tongbao' — meaning 'Circulating currency of the Guangxu reign.' The characters are rendered in bold, well-spaced relief against a flat field, with a plain raised rim encircling the coin. No additional decorative elements are present in the field.
