Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform reading order: top to bottom and right to left. The reign title legend reads 光緒通寶 (Guang Xu Tong Bao), meaning 'Circulating currency of the Guangxu reign.' The characters are boldly cast in raised relief against a plain, unpatterned field. The coin is bordered by a raised rim, and the overall design is typical of the late Qing dynasty cast cash tradition.
