Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by a raised square border, typical of the traditional cash coin format. Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in the four quadrants around the central hole, read in the traditional order: top, bottom, right, left. The legend reads 光緒通寶 (Guangxu Tongbao), identifying the reign of the Guangxu Emperor and denoting circulating currency. The characters are boldly rendered in high relief against a flat, unadorned field. The coin has a plain, rounded rim with no additional decorative elements.
