Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform reading order: top to bottom and right to left. The four ideograms read 嘉隆通寶 (Gia Long Thông Bảo), translating as 'Gia Long [reign era] universal currency.' The characters are boldly cast in raised relief within a plain inner rim, with a raised outer border encircling the entire field. The overall design is typical of Vietnamese cast cash coinage of the early Nguyễn dynasty.

Reverse description Plain field surrounding the central square hole, with a crescent and a dot positioned to the right of the hole in the inner field. Both symbols are cast in raised relief. The reverse is otherwise unadorned, bounded by a plain raised outer border. This crescent-and-dot privy mark serves as a mint or workshop identifier distinguishing this variety from other Gia Long Thông Bảo cash coins.
