Obverse description Round cast bronze coin with a central square hole framed by a raised inner rim. Four Chinese characters in kaishu (regular script) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, reading clockwise from the top: 大 (dà), 通 (tōng), 中 (zhōng), 寶 (bǎo), forming the legend 大中通寶 (Dazhong Tongbao, meaning 'Great Zhong Universal Currency'). The characters are bold and well-defined, raised in relief against a flat field. The coin is bounded by a raised outer rim, and the surfaces display a patina of green verdigris consistent with aged bronze.

Additional information

The Great Zhong State was the short-lived regime of Chen Youliang, one of the most formidable rivals Zhu Yuanzhang faced during the chaotic collapse of Yuan dynasty authority. Chen, a former fisherman's son who rose through the Red Turban rebellion, proclaimed himself emperor in 1360 and controlled much of the middle Yangtze — Hubei, Jiangxi, and Hunan — at the height of his power. His defeat and death at the Battle of Poyang Lake in 1363, one of the largest naval engagements in history, effectively ended the Zhong state years before this coin's nominal series closed.
